Thumbnail
I have uploaded a video and chosen not to have vzaar encode this one for various reasons. It is already encoded as an mp4 using H.264.
The video plays great. However when I try to generate a thumbnail, the image I get is gray and fuzzy. Is this a known issue? It would be nice to have the ability to upload your own screenshot to use as a thumbnail.
Attached is a screenshot of the video thumbnail that is being
generated. The embeded video can be found here:

Also, this grayed out fuzzy image occurs each time I try to generate a new thumbnail on this video. I've tried using different points in the video to pull a thumbnail from and I get this same result.

Daniel,
Thanks for the suggestion about the humbnail. Yes this is something we are working on.
Regarding your issue. I can see that you are using the thumbnial setting in the settings page. You can also set the tumbnail in the video asset page here: http://vzaar.com/videos/285682
Can you try setting this to 3.44 and let me know what the result is like.
Regards,
Ian

I set the thumbnail for 3.44 and still get the same grayed out fuzzy thumbnail... It looks the same as the screenshot I sent last.

Daniel,
Can I suggest that you give me your tel number so I can call to try and work though this with you. I am wondering if it has something to do with the framrate. I can not seem to put my finger on the problem.
Thanks,
Ian

My number is (480) 553-6223 or (480) 273-9421. I will be back in the office monday 5/3.
The frame rate that I'm encoding at is 29.97. I just uploaded a different video and it too is having the same thumbnail problem. Both videos will not encode if I try and let vzaar encode them. They are compressed with H.264 in mp4 format. I'm not sure what else I can do differently... I scaled the video to the "large" setting on the vzaar dashboard.
Like I said before, the videos play great, but the thumbnails are crapified. We are doing a full rollout of our 19 videos in a few weeks, so I'll need to get it cleared up asap. Even if I could just send you a thumbnail to use? Or if there is some setting that I may be using that I should change, please let me know. I could also do a screenshot of my render/encoding settings if that would help? Thanks for your help!

Hi Daniel,
I’ve done some experimenting on one of your videos and I think it’s because you are interlacing (see attached) your output (something generally not needed for computer monitors)
I took one of your videos and saved it without interlacing and it seems to have worked fine: http://vzaar.com/videos/293695
Can you try outputting a video without interlacing and trying?
If you wish further advice on encoding, please let me know, I’m happy to help.

I thought I had my output set to progressive scan. I'll change it and retry. I'm using premiere pro cs4, and I've seen some discussion online about it's insufficient deinterlacing abilities. I'll let you know what I find.

You guys were right about the interlacing. In Premiere CS3 there was a was to deinterlace all footage at once before rendering. In CS4 however, you've got to choose which clips you want to deinterlace. I've uploaded 2 videos that I've fixed and they both work great. Thanks for all your help!
